Methods of Preparation of Carboxylic Acids

Carboxylic acids are important organic compounds containing the carboxyl group (–COOH). They are widely found in nature and are used in the manufacture of medicines, dyes, polymers, and food preservatives. Carboxylic acids can be prepared by several methods depending on the nature of the starting compound.

1. From Primary Alcohols and Aldehydes

Primary alcohols and aldehydes can be converted into carboxylic acids by oxidation. This is one of the most common laboratory and industrial methods for preparing carboxylic acids.

  • When a primary alcohol is treated with strong oxidizing agents such as acidified potassium dichromate (K2Cr2O7) or potassium permanganate (KMnO4), it is first oxidized to an aldehyde and then further oxidized to a carboxylic acid.
  • Since aldehydes are readily oxidized, they can also be directly converted into carboxylic acids under suitable conditions.

2. From Alkylbenzenes

Alkyl benzenes containing at least one benzylic hydrogen atom undergo oxidation to form aromatic carboxylic acids. This reaction is useful for preparing benzoic acid and its derivatives.

3. From Nitriles and Amides

Nitriles undergo hydrolysis in acidic or alkaline medium to form carboxylic acids. This method is important because it increases the carbon chain by one carbon atom.

  • The nitrile group (–CN) is converted into a carboxyl group (–COOH) on hydrolysis.
  • The nitrogen atom is removed in the form of ammonia or ammonium salts, while the carbon atom of the cyano group becomes part of the carboxyl group.
  • Thus, nitriles are converted into the corresponding carboxylic acids.

4. From Grignard Reagents

Grignard reagents react with carbon dioxide to produce carboxylic acids. This method is useful for preparing higher carboxylic acids.

  • The Grignard reagent first reacts with dry carbon dioxide to form a magnesium salt, which on acidic hydrolysis yields the corresponding carboxylic acid.
  • On subsequent acidic hydrolysis, the magnesium salt is converted into the corresponding carboxylic acid.
  • This reaction is an important synthetic method for preparing higher carboxylic acids.

5. Hydrolysis of Ester

Esters can be converted into carboxylic acids through hydrolysis in acidic medium. This reaction is the reverse of esterification.

  • When esters are heated with water in the presence of an acid catalyst, the ester bond breaks and forms a carboxylic acid and an alcohol.
  • This reaction is widely used both in laboratories and in industrial processes for obtaining pure carboxylic acids.
