Lymph is a clear, colorless to pale yellow fluid that circulates through the lymphatic system and is formed from excess tissue fluid surrounding body cells.

  • It plays an important role in maintaining fluid balance, transporting absorbed fats, and defending the body against infections.
  • Unlike blood, lymph contains fewer proteins and normally lacks red blood cells.
  • It serves as a vital link between body tissues and the circulatory system, contributing to both circulation and immunity.

Structure of the Lymphatic System

The lymphatic system consists of a network of vessels, nodes, and lymphoid organs that collect, filter, and transport lymph throughout the body.

1. Lymphatic Capillaries

Lymphatic capillaries are tiny, thin-walled vessels present in almost all tissues of the body. They absorb excess tissue fluid and initiate the formation of lymph.

2. Lymphatic Vessels

These vessels carry lymph from tissues toward the heart. They possess valves that prevent the backward flow of lymph and ensure its one-way movement.

3. Lymph Nodes

Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures located along lymphatic vessels. They act as biological filters by trapping bacteria, viruses, toxins, and other foreign particles. Lymphocytes present in the nodes destroy harmful microorganisms and help in immunity.

4. Lymphoid Organs

Several organs are associated with the lymphatic system, including:

  • Spleen
  • Thymus
  • Tonsils
  • Peyer's patches
  • Bone marrow

These organs produce, store, and mature immune cells that help defend the body against infections.

Formation of Lymph

  • The formation of lymph begins in the blood capillaries. As blood flows through capillaries, a portion of the plasma filters through the thin capillary walls into the spaces surrounding the body cells.
  • This fluid is known as tissue fluid or interstitial fluid. Tissue fluid provides oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other essential substances to the cells and receives carbon dioxide and metabolic wastes from them.
  • Most of the tissue fluid returns to the blood capillaries, but a small amount remains in the intercellular spaces. This excess fluid enters tiny lymphatic capillaries and is then called lymph.
  • The lymph is collected by larger lymphatic vessels and eventually returned to the bloodstream through the major veins near the heart.

Composition of Lymph

Lymph consists of several components that contribute to its various functions in the body. Because lymph contains a large number of lymphocytes, it plays a crucial role in the body's immune responses.

  • Water forms the major part of lymph.
  • Plasma proteins are present in smaller amounts than in blood.
  • Lymphocytes and other white blood cells are abundant.
  • Nutrients such as glucose, amino acids, and salts are present.
  • Waste products from cellular metabolism are carried in lymph.
  • Fats absorbed from the intestine are transported through lymphatic vessels.
  • Red blood cells and platelets are generally absent under normal conditions.

Functions of Lymph

  • One of the most important functions of lymph is the collection and return of excess tissue fluid to the bloodstream. This prevents the accumulation of fluid in tissues and helps maintain normal blood volume and blood pressure.
  • The lymphatic vessels present in the intestinal villi, known as lacteals, absorb fatty acids and glycerol from the small intestine. These fats are transported through the lymph and eventually enter the bloodstream. The lymph carrying absorbed fats appears milky white and is called chyle.
  • Lymph contains a large number of lymphocytes that help identify and destroy harmful microorganisms, toxins, and abnormal cells. Lymph nodes act as filtration centres that remove pathogens before they can spread throughout the body.
  • Lymph helps transport nutrients, hormones, and other substances between body tissues and the bloodstream, thereby assisting in maintaining cellular functions.
  • Metabolic waste products produced by body cells are collected by tissue fluid and lymph and eventually returned to the bloodstream for elimination by excretory organs.

Disorders of the Lymphatic System

  • Lymphedema: Lymphedema is a condition characterised by the accumulation of lymph in tissues due to blockage or damage to lymphatic vessels, resulting in swelling of affected body parts.
  • Filariasis (Elephantiasis): Filariasis is caused by parasitic worms that block lymphatic vessels, leading to severe swelling of limbs and genital organs.
  • Lymphadenitis: Lymphadenitis refers to the inflammation and enlargement of lymph nodes due to infection.
  • Lymphoma: Lymphoma is a type of cancer that originates in lymphatic tissues and affects the normal functioning of lymphocytes.
